Our take

Playa Conchal is made of crushed shells rather than sand, and The Westin Reserva Conchal gives its guests direct access to it, while everyone else parks in Brasilito and walks in along the shore. That access, an 18-hole, par-71 golf course, a lagoon-style pool, a kids club and an all-inclusive plan sit behind its 9.0 across more than 4,000 reviews. The beach has no public facilities, so guests rely on the resort for shade, toilets and food. I would book it for a beach week with children or golf in mind. Travellers who want to eat in local sodas and change beaches every day will barely use the plan they chose.

  • ✓Snorkel at the east end of Playa Conchal, toward Brasilito, where rocks shelter the water; when waves stir up the shell sand, visibility drops fast, so pick a calm morning.
  • ✓Vendors on the public beach in front of the resort, massage sellers included, are not part of the hotel, so nothing bought from them falls under the all-inclusive plan.
  • ✓Keep bags zipped at the pool and on the beach: iguanas and other animals on the grounds forage through anything left unattended.
  • ✓Walk the shore to Brasilito for a change of scene and a ceviche at a local beach bar, but keep children close, because ATV tours cross the beach there.
  • ✓Fly into Liberia (LIR) rather than San José: Guanacaste's airport is far closer to Playa Conchal and saves most of a travel day.

Why we love it

  • The extensive all-inclusive dining and bar options

  • On-site golf course for enthusiasts

Why guests love it

Daily activities at the Westin Kids Club, a lagoon-style pool and an all-inclusive plan make The Westin Reserva Conchal one of the simplest family bases in Guanacaste: once you arrive, nobody has to find a restaurant or a supermarket. Children and pets are both welcome. Playa Conchal's crushed shells are coarser underfoot than sand, so water shoes help small children, and waves can churn the water enough to spoil a snorkel, so look at the sea before promising one. Iguanas wander the grounds, a highlight for younger kids, but they and other animals raid unattended bags, so snacks stay zipped. Golfing parents get an 18-hole, par-71 course without leaving the property. The trade-off is that a resort this size becomes its own world; families who want a taste of local life will need a car, or the walk along the beach to Brasilito.
