Our take

Hotel Pacuare, also known as Centro Turístico Pacuare, is a 62-room hotel in Pacuarito, just outside Siquirres on Route 32, the highway between San José and Puerto Limón. Siquirres is the take-out of the Lower Pacuare, the river's classic rafting run, so this is a bed for rafters who want to stay on rather than ride the van back, and for drivers splitting the trip to the Caribbean. You get air-conditioned rooms with garden views, a year-round pool with a separate children's pool, a bar and a restaurant with vegetarian options. I would not choose it for a beach holiday or for nightlife. Guests rate it 8.0 across 226 reviews.

  • ✓Book rafting with an operator whose Lower Pacuare trip ends in Siquirres, then stay the night here instead of riding the return van to San José straight after the river.
  • ✓Carry a card: the hotel's published policy says it does not accept cash payments.
  • ✓There is no elevator, so ask for a ground-floor room if anyone in your group struggles with stairs.
  • ✓Pets are not allowed, so travellers driving with a dog need another base along Route 32.

Why we love it

  • Comfortable family rooms with garden views
  • Year-round outdoor swimming pool
  • On-site restaurant with local cuisine
  • Peaceful garden and terrace
Why guests love it

Hotel Pacuare is a practical stop for families on the road between San José and the Caribbean coast. The separate children's pool next to the main pool is the detail that matters with small children, the air-conditioned family rooms look onto the garden, and the restaurant serves breakfast and dinner with vegetarian options, so nobody has to drive out in the evening. Parking is free. Older children and teenagers who meet the rafting operators' age rules can run the Lower Pacuare, which ends in Siquirres. Keep in mind there is no elevator, pets are not allowed and payment is by card only. It is an overnight base, not a resort: Siquirres has no beach, and the Limón coast is still ahead. Guests score it 8.0 from 226 reviews.
