About this stay

Hotel Aeropuerto is a three-star stopover hotel in Alajuela, about 4 km west of Juan Santamaría International Airport, beside the Pan-American Highway. It opened in 1992. Rooms are air-conditioned and non-smoking, from a standard room with one queen bed to a triple with three queen beds and a quadruple with two queen beds and a bathtub; there are no suites. The outdoor pool has sun loungers and sits among palms and higuerón trees. Dirigo Fermentory, the restaurant and bar on site, serves regional dishes with craft beer and kombucha, and breakfast runs from 6:30 to 9:30 at an extra charge. A free airport shuttle, free parking and a 24-hour front desk make it a practical base for a first or last night in Costa Rica.

Our take

Hotel Aeropuerto opened in 1992 beside the Pan-American Highway, about 4 km west of Juan Santamaría International Airport. Its age shows in rooms that reviewers call clean but old. What still earns it an arrival or departure night is logistics: a free shuttle that meets arrivals around the clock and covers departures from the hotel until 11:00, a 24-hour front desk and an outdoor pool for the afternoon after a long-haul flight. Dirigo Fermentory, the restaurant and bar on site, pours craft beer and kombucha, so dinner does not mean a drive into Alajuela. Of the 28 Alajuela hotels on this site, 25 score higher than its 8.1 out of 10 from 632 reviews. I book it for the shuttle, not for the room.

  • ✓Send the hotel your flight number before you fly and ask where its driver will wait; if nobody is there, take an orange official airport taxi from the line outside arrivals, or walk to the rideshare pickup area outside the terminal.
  • ✓The shuttle covers departures only when you leave the hotel before 11:00, so a dawn or early-morning flight is covered; for an afternoon, evening or after-midnight flight, ask the desk to book a taxi the day before.
  • ✓Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 9:30 and is not part of every rate, so before a flight that needs you at the airport by 6:00, plan to eat at the terminal.
  • ✓For a family, ask for the triple room with three queen beds or the quadruple with two queen beds and a bathtub; there are no suites.
  • ✓Picking up a rental car on arrival? Parking is free, and the roads to Arenal and Guanacaste leave Alajuela westward, so the next morning you never cross San José.

Why we love it

  • Free shuttle to and from SJO, about 4 km away
  • Outdoor pool for the afternoon after a long flight
  • Dinner and craft beer on site at Dirigo Fermentory
  • Free parking for travellers who collect a rental car at the airport
Why guests love it

With children, Hotel Aeropuerto has one clear job: the first night after landing at SJO or the last night before flying home. The free shuttle spares you a taxi queue with luggage and tired children, the outdoor pool gives them somewhere to move after a day of sitting, and families can choose a triple room with three queen beds or a quadruple with two queen beds and a bathtub, though there are no suites. The limits are real. There is no children's programme, the hotel stands on the highway side of Alajuela, and breakfast starts at 6:30, too late before a dawn check-in at the airport. The building dates from 1992, and it looks it. I would book one night here at each end of the trip and keep the holiday itself for Arenal or the coast.
